Art Farmer - The Summer Knows

Review by Nazif İlbek

The Summer Knows by Art Farmer is an exceptional jazz album that showcases the trumpeter's virtuosity and musicality. Released in 1977, the album features Farmer's interpretations of several classic jazz standards, as well as a few original compositions.

From the opening track, "The Summer Knows," Farmer's warm and lyrical tone is immediately apparent. His playing is both soulful and technically precise, with each note carefully crafted to convey the emotion of the music. The album's arrangements are also top-notch, with a tight rhythm section and tasteful use of horns and strings.

One standout track is Farmer's rendition of "I Can't Get Started," a classic jazz standard that has been covered by countless musicians over the years. Farmer's version is particularly noteworthy for its subtle variations on the melody and its seamless transitions between solos and ensemble playing.

Another highlight is the original composition "Petite Belle," a lively and upbeat tune that showcases Farmer's improvisational skills as well as his ability to write catchy melodies.

Prince's "God (Love Theme from "Purple Rain")" owes something to this song. Or not. You decide.

So much better than a lot of famous jazz musicians. I can hear a story in this.

Thank you Louis , seeked it to share as part of my Facebook story for a set of summer pictures. I suppose it carries a melancholy that only an ex jazz trumpeter can appreciate. Sometimes things pop into our lifes for unkwin reasons. I decided to follow this one this summer morning. Although I could not find it under the music for Facebook my story, I realize now it calls me to dust of my trumpet and or perhaps use it for my book. Count it , art farmer, his trumpet and you will be there somehow.
