Be'lakor - Stones Reach

Review by Jiangtang Hu

Be'lakor's latest album, Stones Reach, is a captivating and immersive work of melodic death metal. The Australian band has crafted a collection of songs that are both heavy and intricate, with plenty of dynamic shifts and unexpected turns to keep listeners engaged.

The guitar work on Stones Reach is particularly impressive, with intricate riffs and solos that showcase the technical prowess of the band's musicians. The vocals are also a standout feature, with powerful growls and clean singing that add depth and emotion to the songs.

One of the strengths of Stones Reach is the way it balances aggression and melody. While some tracks, such as "Abeyance" and "Venator," are undeniably brutal, others like "Remnants" and "Fraught" feature soaring melodies and atmospheric passages that create a sense of grandeur and beauty.

Australia's Be'Lakor make E/D-tuned Classic/Power Metal in the vein of Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Opeth and Omnium Gatherum. Their 2007 debut album, The Frail Tide, was never released under a label. The long songs feature multiple moods and rhythms, though the growl-only vocals tend to get tiresome: the band employs soaring leads, mid-tempo marches, sudden Post-Hardcore bursts, fleeting acoustic sections and post-In Flames diatonic riffing, with frequently tremoloed leads. The tendency to "apparently perfect" songwriting arrangements and the excess of clean production make the songs seem flat and fail to hide a certain repetition of melodies and scales not unlike Insomnium and Amorphis: most evident of this is on "The Desolation of Ares", where only the fastest sections manage to impress. The band's second album, 2009's Stone's Reach, is considered their most solid yet, and except for an acoustic instrumental, contains more of the band's Power/Gothic Metal sound. "Venator", for example, follows the same D-minor waltz tempo for its whole 8 minutes course, rehashing the same notes with sweep picking and acute licks, and the same is in "From Schyte to Sceptre", just one tone above. In both the longest and the shortest cuts, the musicians are totally unable of varying their approach or moods, as all the rhythmic/melodic figures appear too derivative and traditional-based, lacking memorable ideas in the lot: even the closing cut, "Countless Skies", is more dragging than epic. Due to its length and impersonal nature, Stone's Reach comes out even worse than their debut.Highlights: "From Scythe to Sceptre".
