Crimson Glory - Astronomica

Review by Austin Lefebvre

Astronomica is the fourth studio album by American heavy metal band Crimson Glory. Released in 1999, it marked the return of the band after a long hiatus and the first album without their original singer, Midnight, who had passed away in 1999. The album features Todd La Torre on vocals, who would later become the lead singer of Queensrÿche.

The album is a concept album about space, science fiction, and the mysteries of the universe. The music is a mix of progressive metal, power metal, and symphonic metal, with a lot of keyboards and orchestration. The songs are long and complex, with many tempo changes, intricate guitar solos, and powerful vocals.

The album received mixed reviews from critics and fans. Some praised it for its ambitious concept, technical skill, and emotional depth, while others criticized it for its lack of originality, overblown production, and excessive length. However, most agreed that it was a worthy addition to Crimson Glory's discography and a testament to their enduring legacy.

Astronomica is a solid album that showcases Crimson Glory's musical prowess and artistic vision. It may not be their best work, but it is still a must-have for fans of progressive and power metal.

The fourth and last Crimson Glory album, 1999's Astronomica, was released without Midnight on vocals (who had left the band and would have died of stomach aneurysm in 2009): instead, on vocals there's the less talented, chicken-screaming Wade Black (after Crimson Glory, he would have sung on dozen other minor projects). Conceptually, the album is once again trash, both in the material and in the vocal performance, not to count the total lack of complexity in the material. After this album, they disbanded the following year, re-reformed in 2005 for a few tours with Todd La Torre, and when he joined Queensryche, they disbanded with no announcements. Since Jon Drenning was arrested in 2014 for cocaine traffic, we doubt they will reform. Ever.Highlights: "The Other Side of Midnight".
