Interesting... I don't think I ever heard this version before. Was surprised to see it cracked the Billboard Hot 100 for a few weeks.

Great review, thanks.

4 charted versions. Pretty much the last time we had quite that many versions of a song at once. 2 happened a few times after this (Star Wars & Star Wars/Cantina Band being the best known)

On this day in 1977 {April 23rd} two versions of "Gonna Fly Now {Theme from 'Rocky'}" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart
Bill Conti's version peaked #1 {for 1 week} and spent 20 weeks on the Top 100; while Maynard Ferguson's version reached #28
And also in 1977 two other versions charted; and both those versions peaked at #94, one was by Current and the other by the Rhythm Heritage
R.I.P. Maynard Ferguson {1928 - 2006} and Bill Conti celebrated his 71st birthday ten days ago on April 13th

Ok, I was just reading the article from Billboard. Obviously they got it wrong in the article.

I worked at Playboy during this release. We had no affiliation with RCA. The deal was with Sony (Columbia Records)

There was a jazzed up version of Gonna Fly Now played in the background (on the radio or on a record player) in the first Rocky movie (when Adrian first went to Rocky's apartment). I'd love to find that version

Was ready about this version in an old issue of Billboard. Current was a group of New York studio musicians put together by Joe Saraceno, producer for many instrumental songs in the 60s like songs by the Marketts. Although the last of the 4 versions to chart, it was the first to be released as a single. It was the only version to be specifically targeted to Adult Contemporary stations. Finally it was the first release by Playboy records after its new deal to be absorbed by RCA.

The original version was produced by Bill Conti. This version is a remake, and not featured in the film.
