British dance music bandleader, vocalist and actor.
Born August 22, 1899 in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England, UK.
Died December 4, 1969 (age of 70) in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, UK.
He was the Director of Dance Music for the BBC, 1928 to 1932 and 1941 to 1946. During the 1950's and 1960's, he worked for the BBC as a disc jockey. He led several successful dance bands during the 1920's and 1930's. The bands were showcased on radio and in British films. Payne's tag line was "Pleasure Without Payne". His was the first band to entertain troops in France in 1939.
He was married to British singer . He wrote two autobiographies, "This is Jack Payne" (1932) and "Signature Tune" (1947).
