Review by Richard Chambers

Grândola Vila Morena Com As Minhas Tamanquinhas is a remarkable album by the revered Portuguese singer-songwriter José Afonso. Released in 1972, the album features some of Afonso's most iconic songs, including the titular "Grândola, Vila Morena," which became an anthem for the Portuguese revolution of 1974.

The album showcases Afonso's unique blend of traditional Portuguese folk music and political activism. His lyrics are poetic, poignant, and often critical of the political and social injustices of his time. The music is characterized by its use of traditional Portuguese instruments, such as the tamanquinhas (small drums), which gives the album an authentic and organic feel.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Venham Mais Cinco," a song that criticizes the Portuguese government's colonial policies in Africa. The song's haunting melody and Afonso's emotive vocals make it a powerful and moving piece of music.

About José Afonso

b. Aveiro 2 August 1929, d. Setúbal 23 February 1987 José Afonso was, and still remains among the most influential folk and political musicians in Portuguese history. He is usually referred to as Zeca Afonso - Zeca being the Portuguese diminutive form of José. Take note that he didn't use this as his artist name on his own releases. He became an icon among Portuguese left-wing activists due to his music's role in the resistance against Oliveira Salazar's dictatorial regime. This resistance finally triumphed in 1974, with the pro-democratic leftist military coup, called the Carnation Revolution. In the ensuing revolutionary process he was a very active musician and continued composing political and folk songs, often criticizing post-revolutionary changes. Years after his death, he is still widely listened to, not only in Portugal, but also abroad.
