Lounge Lizards - Live 7981

Review by Morena T.

The album "Live 7981" by Lounge Lizards is a testament to the band's improvisational skills and unique sound. The album, recorded live in New York in 1979 and 1981, captures the energy and spontaneity of the band's performances.

The Lounge Lizards' music is a blend of jazz, rock, and avant-garde influences, with a heavy emphasis on improvisation. The band's sound is characterized by John Lurie's saxophone playing, which ranges from smooth and melodic to wild and dissonant.

The album features a mix of original compositions and covers, including a funky rendition of "Harlem Nocturne" and a haunting version of "Conquest of Rar." The band's improvisational skills are on full display in tracks like "Wangling" and "Incident on South Street."

About Lounge Lizards

The Lounge Lizards were an eclectic musical group founded by saxophonist John Lurie and his brother, pianist Evan Lurie, in 1978. Initially known for their ironic, tongue-in-cheek take on jazz, The Lounge Lizards eventually became a showcase for John Lurie's sophisticated compositions straddling jazz and many other genres. They were active until about 1998 with the Lurie brothers as the only constant members, though many leading New York City based musicians were members of the group. The group's name was borrowed from American slang. A lounge lizard is typically depicted as a well-dressed man who frequents the establishments in which the rich gather with the intention of seducing a wealthy woman with his flattery and deceptive charm.

Why Henry Fliegelheimer? Of course Old Bill hipped us to that bizarre rant Henry put out when he was dying. All that is very beatnik.. and the Lizards are the archetypal Beatnik band.
"French Canadian bean soup! Tell them I want to pay!" All of which puts us in mind of that wonderful country tune that has the kicker "..but I'm shot four times and dyin'!"

It was in 1981 in London when i saw them - and heard of them - actually. They opened up for the first re-formed King Crimson band, which appeared by the name DISCIPLINE at the time. I remember that the guitarist ( must have been Arto Lindsay ) kept breaking the strings of his guitar by strumming very hard on dissonant random chords. Near the end of the performance no string was left unbroken. Then he unstrapped the guitar, took a saxophone and played a unison - or octave - duet with John Lurie, which brought the performance to the end. An enjoyable experience on the whole. I think he must be in this performance too. I can hear his noise-guitar sound although he is invisible in the video.
