Review by Cathy MacPherson

Fidelio, the only opera written by Ludwig Van Beethoven, has been praised for its powerful themes of freedom and love. The 1979 recording of Fidelio, featuring Gwyneth Jones, Edith Mathis, James King, Peter Schreier, Theo Adam, Franz Crass, Martti Talvela, Staatskapelle Dresden, and conducted by Karl Böhm, is a standout performance.

The cast is exceptional, with Gwyneth Jones delivering a stunning performance as Leonore, the brave and loyal wife who disguises herself as a man in order to rescue her husband from political imprisonment. Her powerful voice captures the emotional intensity of the role, and her duets with James King, who plays Florestan, are particularly moving.

Edith Mathis also shines as Marzelline, the daughter of the prison warden who falls in love with Leonore's alter ego, Fidelio. Her sweet and innocent voice complements the more dramatic performances of Jones and King.

Theo Adam and Franz Crass provide strong supporting roles as Don Pizarro and Rocco, respectively. Their deep and commanding voices convey the oppressive nature of the prison and the corrupt politics that allow it to exist.

The Staatskapelle Dresden, under the direction of Karl Böhm, provides a powerful and cohesive musical backdrop for the performers. The orchestra's dynamic range and precision add depth and emotion to the already stirring performances.

German composer and pianist, born in 1770 (baptized 17 December 1770) in Bonn, Germany and died 26 March 1827 in Vienna, Austria. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in classical music. Beethoven led Viennese Classicism to its highest development and paved the way for Romantic music. Beethoven was the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister. He moved in 1792 to Vienna, where he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers. To his contemporaries he was sometimes a controversial figure, making heavy demands on listeners both by the length and by the complexity of his writing, as he explored new fields of music.
