Ludwig van Beethoven Wiener Philharmoniker Claudio Abbado - Symphonien Nos 1 4

Review by Tara Schmakel

Symphonien Nos 1-4 by Ludwig van Beethoven, performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker and conducted by Claudio Abbado, is a truly magnificent album that showcases the composer's genius. The orchestra's flawless execution and Abbado's masterful interpretation of the symphonies make for a captivating listening experience.

The album begins with Symphony No. 1, which is characterized by its lightness and playfulness. The Wiener Philharmoniker's lively playing captures the joyful spirit of the piece, while Abbado's conducting brings out the subtle nuances of Beethoven's composition.

Symphony No. 2, on the other hand, is a more dramatic and intense work. The orchestra's powerful performance under Abbado's direction perfectly conveys the symphony's emotional depth and complexity.

Symphony No. 3, also known as the "Eroica," is a monumental work that marked a turning point in Beethoven's career. The Wiener Philharmoniker and Abbado rise to the challenge of this ambitious composition with great skill and sensitivity, delivering a performance that is both grand and nuanced.

The album concludes with Symphony No. 4, which is perhaps the most lyrical and graceful of Beethoven's symphonies. The Wiener Philharmoniker's delicate playing and Abbado's subtle conducting create a beautiful and serene atmosphere.

German composer and pianist, born in 1770 (baptized 17 December 1770) in Bonn, Germany and died 26 March 1827 in Vienna, Austria. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in classical music. Beethoven led Viennese Classicism to its highest development and paved the way for Romantic music. Beethoven was the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister. He moved in 1792 to Vienna, where he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers. To his contemporaries he was sometimes a controversial figure, making heavy demands on listeners both by the length and by the complexity of his writing, as he explored new fields of music.
