Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi (born September 16, 1916, Madurai Temple City, Tamil Nadu, India  died December 11, 2004, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) also known as M.S., was a Carnatic vocalist and she often performed with her daughter, . She was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor.
