Born August 18th, 1909 in Warszaw, Poland, died on August 26th, 1980 in Culver City, United States. A soprano and an actress who started her career in the 1920s in the Soviet Union and was active later in Germany and the United States, where she later appeared in Hollywood movies.

Dark power in a coloratura voice... incomparable.
I adore how Korjus never seems to have to reach for the highest of notes. With some others, there is a minuscule hesitation, you can almost imagine them psyching themselves up to reach them. Not with her. Thank you for posting this!
This was Korjus' most admired role and in the staccato sections she is incomparable for her bell like purity. She is even good in the triplets section which is so difficult.
Unfortunately film soundtracks tend to suggest that her pitch was dodgy - often flat on very high notes - I am sure that is just to do with film recordings.
Her operatic career was extensive and she was a gorgeous woman too. A real pleasure to look at on screen. Would have preferred the end of the aria as Mozart wrote it, but hey she just couldn't resist it!

I first heard this about 60 years ago in my school music class in Canberra and it still gives me goose-pimples. Thank you Belcantist and all the other wonderful people who pay their debt to outstanding composers and artists by retrieving their work and putting it up on Youtube. (and, of course, thank you Youtube for making it possible).
I heard this on the radio this morning while flipping through stations. I almost crashed.
