I hate to say this... but Donny Osmond absolutely butchered this song. Not really his fault given his age at the time, but there's a reason why his version got forgotten.

Written by Rick Hall and Billy Sherrill, "Sweet and Innocent" had first been recorded by Roy Orbison in 1958, and was the B-side of his single "Seems to Me." Orbison's version did not chart.  Also in 1958, Judd Records released its first single (Judd 1001); Bobby Denton had an uncharted A-side single.  Clyde McPhatter, founder of the Drifters, also had an uncharted single on Amy Records in 1967. Donny Osmond reached No. 7 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart in June 1971; the song was billed as his first solo single release.

Billy Sherrill mentioned as one of the songwriters may have been the same that did the song, "Don't You Rock Me, Daddy-O" and "Rock On Baby All Night Long" that were released on the Tyme label from Indianapolis, Indiana in the late 1950s.  I don't know if he may have produced Tammy Wynette's records.

Quit comparing anything Donny Osmond did with a legend like Roy Orbison. Not even in the same ball park ! Oh' and I love the backing by the equally legendary Jordanaires and lets not forget Boots Randolph on that sax .
