Pariahs Child, the eighth studio album by Finnish power metal band Sonata Arctica, is a triumphant return to form for the group. The album is a cohesive and well-crafted collection of songs that showcase the band's strengths while also pushing them in new musical directions.

From the opening track, "The Wolves Die Young," it is clear that Sonata Arctica has not lost any of their energy or passion. The song is a fast-paced, guitar-heavy anthem that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Other standout tracks include "Running Lights," a catchy and upbeat tune that features some impressive vocal acrobatics from lead singer Tony Kakko, and "Cloud Factory," a more experimental track that incorporates electronic elements and showcases the band's versatility.

The band's 2014 album, Pariah's Child, features more drips into funereal moods ("The Wolves Die Young") and let's-hug-each-other Pop/Power Metal breakdowns like before, but slowed down to a crawl ("Running Lights") or heavenly-sounding post-Marillon blinking keyboards ("Take One Breath"). There's strange fixation with themes of family values ("Blood") and family relationships ("What Did You Do in the War, Dad?"), suggesting it was recorded during a time of low mood and maturity depression for some members (allegedly). It's absolutely nothing like a return to form to their previous imitative double-bass galore: it's a totally different release, with several New Age-sounding keyboards and sympathizing with major-key Gothic/Doom Metal stylings, and even the Guns 'n' Roses-like Punk Metal grooves on "Half Marathon Man" sound reflective, especially when coupled with the motivational lyrics ("Good morning, somebody kill me right now / I've never felt this kind of a burning cold / I read it somewhere, running is like a drug / As for the second day, I can say it is not / It's bright white burning pain / Bring it on, baby!")."X Marks the Spot" is a theatrical ode of love for rock personalities, "Love" is a parody of a love ballad sung too convincingly, and "Larger than Life" is a final Disneyland-like suite with reflections over accepting death, old age and imperfection. All cap the album with strange features that don't sound like Power Metal cliches, but are rather honest and more complex than they may initially appear. The album made the band seem ready for a change or a morph for their career, but later years proved these expectations wrong.Highlights: "Running Lights", "X Marks the Spot", "Larger than Life".
