Sparks - Best Of

Review by Abhishek Upadhya

The album Best Of by Sparks is a must-have for any fan of the iconic pop duo. Featuring a collection of their greatest hits spanning four decades, this record is a testament to the band's enduring popularity and influence.

From the infectious synth-pop of "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" to the quirky art-rock of "Number One Song in Heaven," this album showcases the eclectic range of Sparks' music. The inclusion of lesser-known tracks such as "Amateur Hour" and "Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth" also adds depth and variety to the compilation.

Overall, the production quality and sound of the album are excellent, and the remastered versions of some of the older songs sound crisp and fresh. The liner notes provide an informative and entertaining overview of the band's career, making this album a great introduction for newcomers to Sparks' music.

Brothers Ron and Russell Mael from Los Angeles, USA have been making diverse music since 1969 under various incarnations of Sparks. In 1979 they ditched the guitars and keyboards of glam geek rock and started working with Italian producer Giorgio Moroder, beginning a love affair with electronic music. Since then they have worked with a variety of people including Finitribe, Les Rita Mitsouko, Erasure, Faith No More and Franz Ferdinand.

Summary by Abhishek Upadhya

In short, the Best Of album by Sparks is a must-have for anyone who appreciates innovative, genre-defying pop music. It's a fitting tribute to a band that has consistently pushed the boundaries of what's possible in popular music.

This song was ahead of its time.Just listen to that synth at the begining, its late 80S ACID HOUSE.A year or too later and this could have been a HIT!

This has a catchy riff that The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards would be envious to have invented. Great rock track. Fantastic song by a band that just never lets up & has existed for decades. I hate disco but this is a knowledgeable rock band that knows how to build an aggressive beat and get feet moving on the dancefloor with expertise.

Bob Haag plays Enodyne Guitars & synths to get the effects. David Kendrick provides massive drums. Leslie Bohem (bass guitar) & the Mael Brothers -- the redoubtable Ron and Russell -- provide everything else. 1986 -- what a cool sound these guys had & they still do it to this day.

Sparks always spoofed and bested the sound of each decade at the same time. Truly the sound of masters.

I love this tune, had the album in the 80s and took it to a club and asked the DJ to play this tune, He did but took it off when no one danced apart from me! It's a little choppy in parts so not surprised.

Is it just me, or is the lack of an obvious snare in this song a musical joke ("Every single beat where it ought to be"). Compare and contrast with most 80's dance songs of that era, which seem to be competing as to who can have the loudest snare. There are a few random snare hits around 3:30, conventional dance tracks would have had these all the way through. I'm sure this little touch was deliberate.

Music that you can dance to
That and that alone is enough for me
Stark naked modern music
Hotter than your momma will ever be

Music that you can dance to
Cracks you like a whip, but it feels so right
Outside the world is colder
Every single night, it's another fight

So what's it gonna be? (gonna be, gonna be)
A symphony tonight? (tonight, tonight)
Perhaps a little jazz? (little jazz, little jazz)
All I wanna hear every day, every night is

Music that you can dance to
Every single beat where it ought to be
Lip smacking good, good, music
That and that alone is enough for me

So what's it gonna be? (gonna be, gonna be)
A symphony tonight? (tonight, tonight)
Perhaps a little jazz? (little jazz, little jazz)
I gotta, gotta move to the beat, to the beat tonight
(tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight,
tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight,
tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight)

Get up, dear
Get up and try
Get up, dear
Get up and fly
Get up, hon
You're the one
Get up, hon
Son of a gun
Shake it, dear
Don't be shy
Shake it, dear
Right in my eye
Shut up, dear
Don't be weird
Get up, dear
The boys are here

Music that you can dance to
Get yourself in tune for the real McCoy
No heavy message, baby
Just the perfect blending of sex and noise

Get up, dear
Get up and try
Get up, dear
Get up and fly
Get up, hon
You're the one
Get up, hon
Son of a gun
Shake it, dear
Don't be shy
Shake it, dear
Right in my eye
Shut up, dear
Don't be weird
Get out of here
The police are here

Music that you can dance to
That and that alone is enough for me
Music that you can dance to
Hotter than your momma will ever be

Music that you can dance to
Music that you can dance to
Music that you can dance to
Music that you can dance to....

I was never someone who liked to go to the disco and dance, and I certainly didn't want to. But this one makes my legs twitch after 5 seconds. Fabulous!

Cmon how about a little space here. You out thank you Rod and Rex Reynolds

It's a 1986 single actually. 'Change' was released in 1985, a whole year before the album and next single came out; God knows why, label trouble I guess.
