This piece perhaps even more than some of the other Kenton/Christy tunes from 1947 indicates that in jazz and popular music something had changed radically. There is no 'love-above' and 'you-true' to be found in the Audrey Lacey lyric (Then a young college student, and an acquaintance of Stan) but rather: 'Thin crystal sheets of hysterical laughter' or 'I can not bear the thing I hear!!'

World War II was over just two years and now there was appearently a need for something else than slik entertainment.

The last part of this song, after the ferocious climax, is relatively quiet but incredibly eerie........

Heard this the first time on my way home one dark Sunday night, it was played on the "jazz show" of my local public radio station. It took several days to even find out the title and performer, several more to find this video. I now have the lp and listen to it fairly often, I cannot get enough of this track (the rest of the album is pretty good too).

This is neat! Kenton's never was my favorite band, swing or otherwise -- then again, I don't think his artistic aspiration was to have a really swingin' band. This is music for listening -- sounds like a sountrack for a crime pic or noir -- and also, you could say, the kind of thing that ended the Swing Era. Of, course, this was progress; much as I love genuine swing, of the '35-'42 period, I know they couldn't keep on with that sound. This was an attempt to expand the limits of pop music.
