Review by Craig Hore

Inflation by Stanley Turrentine is an impressive album that showcases the saxophonist's exceptional skills and versatility. The album features a mix of funky grooves and soulful ballads that highlight Turrentine's ability to convey a range of emotions through his music.

The opening track, "The Man with the Sad Face," sets the tone for the album with its melancholic melody and Turrentine's emotive playing. The following track, "Boogie On Reggae Woman," is a lively funk number that showcases Turrentine's ability to play with energy and precision.

Other standout tracks on the album include "Stairway to Heaven," a soulful ballad that features Turrentine's smooth and expressive playing, and "I Told Jesus," a gospel-inspired track that showcases Turrentine's ability to infuse his music with spirituality and emotion.

Saw him play a cameo role in Shaft as a New York gangster! I was a pre- teen well before I knew he was a famed saxophonist.

Stanley, the best, Mr. Smooth, caught him at the Litchfield Jazz Fest just before his passing.

The ohio players influence is strong with this track. Lovely playing by stan the man. He's killer on nearly every leader album.

My sister Charyl had this album in 1980. I should have taken it with me when I went to New Paltz College in 1982! I searched high and low for this Marcus Wade produced Stanley Turrentine album for 36 years! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

Curiously the album Inflation is not included anywhere on Google amongst Turrentine's discography! In fact he was at his stellar peek on this album especially this track "Closer" which is my most favorite Turrentine tune of all time.

This was written by Sonny Henry, the author of "Evil Ways". Would be great to see him credited.

Feels like a jazz concert at the Greek theatre in Berkeley CA. Sun is setting, with a view panorama view of Sanfrancisco and the Bay bridge.

Nice cool jazz sound!

Lovely rendition of this favorite song of mine, nice slow tempo, beautiful orchestra with the great Sound.  (Great flute in intro, SUPERB orchestra.)  This soothes my restless soul!  THANK YOU for posting, Henry.

This is a favorite song of mine -- so many singers try to do it and ruin it.  Etta Jones, Carmen McRae and Nancy Wilson sing it well, Houston Person is the best sax on this, but I really like this gorgeous rendition with the orchestra, nice flute in the intro, and throughout.  Turrentine plays a very nice sax.  I WILL return to this site to hear this nice orchestral presentation, it's beautiful -- thank you for posting it!

BUT, the real fun was that I got to tell him THIS story. I was listening to him in an interview on KDIA radio in Oakland as I was driving from Sacramento to San Francisco. About fifteen minutes after the interview ended I approaced the Oakland Bay Bridge into SF and the traffic got real bad. Inching along I was listening to Stanley on the radio that the DJ had put on after the interview.

@purkasz, you have good stories on Turrentine plus the song man, I'm blown away. I'm happy you enjoy this piece I posted.

I had the window down and the radio loud. I noticed the guy next to me on my left also had his window down and was listening to the same tune. Then I looked again...IT WAS STANLEY TURRENTINE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT!!!! We inched along that bridge talking and laughing about stuff. Neverf forget that day and loved that I got to tell him that story. Great music man. Thanks for all the great Blue Note sides.
