Review by Heather

Vic Chesnutt's album, Drunk Pre Release, is a raw and emotive collection of songs that showcases the late singer-songwriter's unique voice and songwriting abilities. The album features Chesnutt's trademark blend of folk, rock, and blues, with lyrics that are introspective, confessional, and often darkly humorous.

The album's opening track, "Sleeping Man," sets the tone for the rest of the record, with Chesnutt's distinctive voice and sparse acoustic guitar setting the stage for his deeply personal lyrics. The album's standout tracks include "Gravity of the Situation," a haunting meditation on addiction and mortality, and "Fodder On Her Wings," a soulful tribute to the late jazz singer Nina Simone.

Notes

This is an early production cassette of Drunk, released to local Athens, GA record shops, before the Texas Hotel national release. Song titles are as listed on cassette. "Cutty Sark" and "Lillian Gish" were later released on the 2004 New West Records re-issue. "Bug" is an alternate, full band version rather than the one on West of Rome. The bonus track "She Doesn't Exist" was later released on the Robyn Hitchcock tribute album 'Glass Flesh.' The "Flagpole" bonus track consists of three snippets of music, pieced together as one, and sounds like an advert for the magazine of the same name. The song samples heavily from "Mysterious Ways" by U2.
