Review by Benjamin Bengfort

The album "Yabunirami No Concert" by Ichiryu Kei and Kuri Yoji is a captivating musical experience that showcases the talents of two accomplished Japanese musicians. From the opening track to the final note, the album is a celebration of traditional Japanese music and culture, with a modern twist.

The album features a range of instruments, including the shamisen, koto, and shakuhachi, all played with precision and artistry. The compositions are both lively and contemplative, capturing the beauty and complexity of Japanese music. The musicians' performances are flawless, with each note and rhythm executed with skill and passion.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Sakura," a hauntingly beautiful piece that is a tribute to the cherry blossom tree. The track is a perfect example of the musicians' ability to create a powerful emotional connection with their music.

Notes

  • The record is pressed on red vinyl (like some of their other avant-garde LPs from the time). The 7" is packaged in a hard-cover book which is 9.5" square (22cm x 22cm) and only has 12 b&w pages, and solely consists of a series of drawings which seem to act like a timeline for the music which can be followed while listening. there is almost no text aside from the titles on the cover, most of which is in Japanese, and the words worked into the body of the work, which are in English and can be heard on the recording. This was produced in a limited edition of around 300 copies, and each copy is numbered (via serial rubber stamp).
  • This is the first audio artist's book in Japan.
  • Most of the books are signed by Yoji Kuri the author of the drawings.
