Review by Matt Shanks

Porcupine Tree's album Staircase Infinities is a mesmerizing and thought-provoking experience that takes the listener on a journey through various sonic landscapes. The album, released in 1995, showcases the band's experimental side and features four tracks that are diverse in style and structure.

The opening track, "Cloud Zero," sets the tone with its dreamy, atmospheric soundscapes and haunting vocals. "The Joke's On You" is a more upbeat track, with driving rhythms and catchy guitar riffs. "Third Eye Surfer" is a psychedelic journey that features intricate instrumentation and hypnotic vocals. The album closes with "Like Dust I Have Cleared From My Eye," a haunting and melancholic ballad that showcases the band's ability to create emotional and introspective music.

One of the biggest reasons for the success of Steven Wilson's music is the variety of influences he presents. Of all of PORCUPINE TREE's music, the instrumental psychedelic songs are the ones I usually like least. I'm sure there are a good number of people who agree with me. That personal preference affects the overall rating of Staircase Infinities IMO.My favorite songs on this release are "The Joke's On You" and "Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape". The songs are somewhat similar to each other. However, even Porcupine Tree's lesser material is compelling. It's a testament to Wilson and his fellow musicians that they can make contemporary Floydian psychedelic rock this enjoyable. I'm going to consider Staircase Infinities a excellent release if you're into ambient or progressive rock. Not quite up to late 1990"s/early 2000's Porcupine Tree, but still fine listening.
